Before we had kids, vacation meant long, fancy dinners and maybe a nap by the pool. These days, it's more like snacks in the sand by 9 a.m.
But when we visited the Dominican Republic as a family last December, something just clicked. It felt easy. Our kids were welcomed everywhere, the beach was made for little feet, and the whole trip had this laid-back rhythm that worked with nap schedules, not against them.
Absolutely, yes! Strangers were so genuinely kind and helpful to families. From airport staff to waiters, it was clear: kids aren’t just tolerated here, they’re loved.
Language-wise, you’ll hear a lot of Spanish, but many resort staff speak English or even French, and gestures go a long way. Food-wise, it’s easy to find familiar options: fruit, rice, grilled chicken, pasta, and smoothies. No one went hungry!
We had zero safety concerns while in the Dominican. Even going off the beaten path a few hours, I felt safe and sound the entire time. Tourist areas are generally safe, but it's best to stay alert, especially at night or in less crowded spots (as you would anywhere!). Stick to well-traveled areas, and ask locals for safety tips if needed.
Most hotels in the D.R. have 24-hour security and are easy to get to in case of an emergency. If you’re traveling with little ones, it’s worth checking in advance to see if they offer extra safety features. Transportation is pretty reliable from my experience, but I’d stick to reputable taxis or arrange transfers through your hotel. When it comes to beach or water activities, make sure the kids have the proper safety gear like life vests and bright colored swimsuits (not blue) to ensure they are able to be seen in the water.
Right now, the U.S. has a Level 2 travel advisory for the Dominican Republic, which means it’s generally safe to visit, but there are some safety concerns to keep in mind, especially around certain areas or activities. As we said already, it's always a good idea to stay aware, keep an eye on updates, and take the usual precautions, just like you would in any destination.
We looked for resorts that were easy with littles. These made our short list for sleep setups, walkability, calm beaches, and actually good kids' programming. Something notable about the D.R.’s resorts is that they accept younger kids in their kids’ club (check each resort to be sure) than other places I’d seen. This meant that we could safely drop our then 13-month-old and nearly 3-year-old off without an issue.
A total win for toddler parents. The kids' splash zone is shaded and shallow, and the beach is mellow. Cribs, blackout curtains, and mini-fridges in the room make sleep doable, even with a baby and a preschooler.
Okay, this one's for the kids… but Millennial parents can relive their childhood a little bit, too. Character breakfasts, water slides, and daily slime parties? If your little one watches Nick Jr., they’ll lose their minds (in a good way). Quiet suite options and solid baby amenities make it work for younger sibs, too.
This is the one we actually landed on! A quieter, more boutique vibe, but still family-friendly. There’s a “family zone” with treehouses and nature play, and it’s far enough from the louder sections that nap time stays nap time. It is further from Punta Cana (about a 2 hour shuttle), but in my opinion, it was worth the drive if your kids can tolerate a little longer travel day.
More affordable, but still checks the boxes: large rooms, easy beach access, plenty of shade, and good food. A solid choice if you’re not looking for tons of extras but still want comfort and space.
We kept it simple with excursions… and it worked. A few low-lift hits we’d do again:
The best time is December through April. That’s peak dry season, with warm weather and little rain. If you’re looking to save a bit and avoid crowds, May is also a sweet spot.
Food for thought… August to October is hurricane season. You can still go, but we’d recommend travel insurance and flexible plans.
A few things that helped us make the most of it:
The Dominican Republic just works for families with little kids. Whether it’s your first trip abroad as parents or you’re seasoned pros, this is a place where you can breathe a little easier, play a little longer, and maybe even finish your coffee while it’s hot. Glory!
