3-Day NYC Itinerary with Little Kids

Looking for the best NYC itinerary with kids under 5? This 3-day New York City itinerary for toddlers and young children includes family-friendly attractions, stroller tips, and parent-tested picks.

3-Day NYC Itinerary with Little Kids

When my husband first suggested taking our 3-month-old and 23-month-old sons to New York City, (in February, no less) I thought he was out of his mind. How were we going to juggle nap times, two cribs, and public transit with strollers?

But we’d promised ourselves that becoming parents didn’t mean giving up on adventure. So, we packed our bags (and way too many snacks), booked a hotel, and gave it a shot. Spoiler: it was exhausting and magical all at once.

Here’s the 3-day NYC itinerary we followed with two little kids in tow: what worked, what didn’t, and what I’d absolutely do again.

Central Park is the perfect on-the-go nap spot.

Day 1: Midtown & Central Park

Morning – Central Park

We kicked things off in Central Park, because honestly, where else do you start with kids? The playgrounds are perfect for toddlers, the carousel is a sweet little ride, and the zoo is just the right size to keep their attention.

Afternoon – Big Views

After naps (always), we headed to Summit One Vanderbilt. Our toddler was literally skipping through the balloon room while we admired the views. It felt like a rare win for both parents and kids. We’re planning on returning in just a few weeks!

Evening – Times Square Lights

We made our way through Times Square on the way back to the hotel, which blew our toddler’s mind. We stayed at the Hampton Inn Manhattan/Times Square Central, which was under $200 a night in February, two cribs (though that was TIGHT), and free breakfast. Not glamorous, but it worked well for our needs.

The cold (but empty!) playground.

Day 2: Downtown Adventure

Morning – Ferry Fun

The Staten Island Ferry (shout out, Pete Davidson!) was a highlight. It’s free, stroller-friendly, and you get Statue of Liberty views without the chaos of the actual tour. Win-win.

Afternoon – Playscapes & Dumplings

We found Battery Park Playscape, and wow… this playground is beautiful. Even in the cold, our kids loved it (my husband may have tried the slides too). We suggest grabbing a quick lunch in Chinatown afterward.

Evening – Post-Dinner Walk

We wrapped up the day with a leisurely walk along the High Line. Elevated gardens, city views, and art installations made it perfect for little legs, and the lively atmosphere kept it fun for the whole family.

Summit One Vanderbilt is WORTH IT. I promise!

Day 3: Brooklyn with Kids

Morning – Park + Views

Brooklyn Bridge Park was the dream combo: massive playgrounds and skyline views. You can grab the ferry back if you want another built-in activity.

Afternoon – Kid Choice

Depending on mood, you can pick between the Brooklyn Children’s Museum (lots of hands-on fun for younger kids) or Prospect Park Zoo

Evening – Pizza Night

No NYC trip is complete without pizza. Brooklyn has endless family-friendly spots, so we kept it simple and grabbed an early dinner before heading back to grab our bags.

When you've gotta have pizza, you've gotta have pizza!

My Parent Tips for NYC with Little Kids

  • Strollers: Bring lightweight ones. We had an umbrella stroller for our toddler and a Doona for the baby, and it was the only way we survived.
  • Hotel vs. Suite: Being trapped in one dark hotel room at 7 p.m. bedtime? Not fun. Next time, I’d spring for a suite.
  • Flights: That late-night return flight was a mistake. Picture an overtired toddler running laps in the airport at 9 p.m. Never again.
  • Packing: Bring rain gear. It poured one day, and we had nothing. Rookie mistake.
  • Flexibility: Have a few “wish list” spots, but don’t overschedule. Honestly, playground breaks were as much fun as the big attractions.

Where to Stay (That’ll Work for Everyone)!

So, would I recommend NYC with toddlers? Yes… with the right mindset. It’s not a relaxing trip, but it’s an adventure. You’ll be tired, you’ll carry strollers up more stairs than you thought possible, and you’ll question your life choices more than once. But you’ll also see your kids wide-eyed at Times Square, giggling on ferries, and running free in the middle of one of the busiest cities in the world. And to me, that made it completely worth it!
